Countertop templates provide important information during the countertop installation process. These are physical mockups of the counters that granite installation companies use to cut slabs to size or fabricate other types of countertops to suit the space. The term “template” may also refer to a drawing used to create a quote for granite countertop installation. In the guide below, we will explain how to make a countertop template for both situations so you can get a better idea of how the process works.
Making a Countertop Template for an Estimate
In order to get an estimate for your countertop installation, you will need to have an idea of the dimensions you need for your counters. All you have to do is create a basic drawing that shows the layout of your cabinets. Measure your existing countertops and note the dimensions on the drawing. You may also take a photo of the space and write the dimensions on there.
If you do not have countertops in the room yet, you will need to know how big the cabinets are or will be. Once again, all you have to do is provide a basic drawing in order to get a quote. Your granite installers will come out in person to provide the exact pricing for your new counters, but this should give you a rough idea of what you’ll need to pay.
Making a Full Countertop Template for Construction
During the countertop installation process, your granite installation company will create a countertop template so they can cut or fabricate your new counters. They will use wood strips, a sharp knife, a glue gun and a measuring tape to complete the process. After clearing the old countertops, they will place the strips flush with the old countertops to create a pattern. Once the strips are in place, they will use the hot glue gun to adhere the strips together. This will be replicated for the rest of the countertop template.
It is uncommon for walls to be perfectly straight, which can leave gaps between the wall and strips. Those gaps can later be filled with a granite backsplash or tile. When the strips have been securely glued together, the installers will make notes about walls, edges, appliances, sinks, and other fixtures that may get in the way. After that, the template can be folded up and brought to the warehouse.
