06 Jan Light vs. Dark Granite Countertops: Which Option Is Right for You?
There are many styles of granite to choose from, and no two slabs are exactly the same. That is one of the benefits of granite countertops – you know you are getting a unique piece each and every time. With that in mind, there are two main categories of granite to choose from: light granite countertops and dark granite countertops. Let’s compare those options closely to help you decide which one best suits your needs.
Dark Granite Is Denser Than Light Granite
The main difference between light granite and dark granite is the density of the stone. Light granite is not as dense as dark granite, making it slightly more vulnerable to stains, cracking, and other damage. All varieties of granite are incredibly durable, but darker stone tends to stand up better to excessive wear and tear. If you want the option that is going to last the longest and be the easiest to maintain, you’re probably better off getting a darker color granite countertop.
Consider Your Existing Color Scheme
Unless you plan on completing an entire kitchen remodel, you need to think about the colors that you already have in your kitchen or bathroom. Do you want the stone to blend in with those colors, or do you want a bold contrast? At the very least, you can pull from the color scheme to get inspiration for the tone you want the granite to be. For example, if you have light brown cabinets and dark brown floors, you may want a brown-toned slab of granite that will tie those colors together. If you have white cabinets and grey tile floors, you may want grey-toned granite. The experts here at East Coast Granite would be happy to assist you in the selection process.
Use the Granite to Set the Tone for the Room
If you are installing granite in a new kitchen or bathroom, you could choose a stone that acts as inspiration for the rest of the design. The same theory applies to kitchen remodeling. Do the reverse of the process we mentioned above. Let the style of stone you choose dictate what colors you use in the room. If the granite has subtle silver flakes in it, you could use similar-colored hardware to bring out those details in the space. Take this opportunity to put your own touch on the home, and you are sure to be happy with the results.
